In the news this week we learned of four more Extreme Skiers dying during an avalanche in my home state of Washington in a place I have skied myself, although not in the Death Zone where they were killed.
Around the world, people are pushing the limits daily with Free Jumps, Wing Flights, building climbs and a multitude of other activities that push the envelope. Not even push the envelope, they are flat-out Extreme and a single mistake will lead to death.
Throughout history, we have always pushed the limits but I do not recall a time where it was this over the top. Where it has come to a point where life and family was valued less than the thrill.
I have to wonder. What is leading to this? Where have we gone as a society that we promote and celebrate sports that can easily, at a moments notice, take a life?
Hey, I will be the first one to admit. I love watching.
man that is sad Joe. You are right it`s messed up that things have to get faster and more dangerous to keep our attention. And like you, I love to watch it…but then you read a story like that and it doesn`t seem worth it.
The extreme has always been present, and lives have been lost in countless ways, but our viewing access has never been greater than what it is today. Technology documenting the extreme gives the risk-averse a glimpse into the window of a world where few are successful.
