When I was a kid there were things I loved about summer.

One, was being outside all of the time. Growing up in Olympia, WA you had to take the two to three months you were given and to live it up.

Hangin out with my neighbors Ben and Chuck….Remy up the Hill and Jason from across the lake. And being on a lake, there was a lot of water skiing involved…

One of things I really remember is games. Especially when we were younger.

I couldn’t help think back to all the back yard games we used to dig out.

There were 4 of them that immediately came to mind.

Lawn Darts

Lawn Darts…the good, now illegal ones…those were the best.

And who ever actually played the game? No one. The best was throwing them as high as you could and seeing where they would land…ahhhh the good old days.

croquet

Croquet. I was never very good but always played on the neighbors yard…wicked fun. Still don’t think I know what the colors on the stick mean? I think we went with red for blood and green for I get to hit you till you bleed. :) I was usually on the receiving end.

Horseshoes

Horseshoes….I only played this at my Uncle Bob’s house but always loved it. Completely crappo at it and still cannot do well…even on the WII.

badminton-main

and Badminton….always my strongest summer sport…must have been all the tennis but I could crush a shuttlecock…bam!

So tell me, What were or are your favorite summer games to play? Do you still have a set of “illegal” lawn darts?

  1. Washers, bro. Or, where I’m from, “worshers.”

  2. Growing up in England as a kid Soccer (football) was the game of choice with friends when the weather permitted.

On the few warm sunny days i remember my best fun was sliding down a long grass (turned into straw) bank (hill) on an old appliance cardboard box (poor man’s soap box derby).

As an Older Kid in Aus i had table tennis in my back yard and a pool table and darts inside.

The ‘danger’ was supplied courtesy of a love of making my own bow and arrows . I got shot in the back of the calf with a wayward arrow from a ‘friend’.

more recently i loved to golf in the Aus summer sunshine!

  3. Wow! I never knew they were illegal now. hmmmm. I loved all those games growing up, mostly badminton and croquet. We still play those when we actually are all home at the same time. Our new one is boche ball. My nephew got a set for his bday last year and whenever I’m home he always wants to play it. My parents have tons of land and unique landscape, which makes it ideal to play out there. Lots of fun!!

  4. Kristine

Lawn Darts were definitely my fave as a kid. I remember going to my Grandma’s house and always beating my sister when we played. I can see why they are illegal now, I’m sure they settled a ton of products liability lawsuits for people losing an eye.

I also love badminton, but haven’t played in awhile. I’m much better at it than tennis!!

Before kids, I loved playing golf in the summer. I just don’t have the time to play anymore.

Now that I live in California, we go to the beach a lot so of course, we play beach volleyball. My husband’s family is very large so we can field two big teams. Everyone is super competitive so it makes for lots of fun!!

  5. Was in fundraising a few years. Got sooooo tired of golf tournaments and decided it’s time for a change. Was playing Croquet with friends, probably with a little too much beer, and…idea was born. Found out lots about the sport (yes, I now know what the colors mean!), that there are “Pro” croquet players (chuckles permitted), and started doing 9 Wicket backyard style tournaments for charity fundraising and doing organization team building too. Won’t replace charity golf tournaments any time this year but…
Helps players (and me) to stop taking selves too seriously. Blessings!

This is my page and my chance to share with you all the crap I dream up on a daily basis. What is normal you ask? You tell me. I think I know what normal is but then again, we all think we are the normal ones.
